Sapience, Consciousness, and the Knowledge Instinct (prolegomena to a Physical Theory)

نویسنده

  • Leonid I. Perlovsky
چکیده

The chapter describes a mathematical theory of sapience and consciousness: higher mental abilities including abilities for concepts, emotions, instincts, understanding, imagination, intuition, beautiful, and sublime. The knowledge instinct drives our understanding of the world. Aesthetic emotions, our needs for beautiful and sublime are related to the knowledge instinct. I briefly discuss neurobiological grounds as well as difficulties encountered by previous attempts at mathematical modeling of the mind encountered since the 1950s. Dynamic logic, the mathematics of the knowledge instinct, is related to cognitive and philosophical discussions about the mind and sapience.

Toward physics of the mind: Concepts, emotions, consciousness, and symbols

Mathematical approaches to modeling the mind since the 1950s are reviewed, including artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, and neural networks. I analyze difficulties faced by these algorithms and neural networks and relate them to the fundamental inconsistency of logic discovered by Gödel. Mathematical discussions are related to those in neurobiology, psychology, cognitive science, and...

Physics of the mind: Concepts, emotions, language, cognition, consciousness, beauty, music, and symbolic culture

Mathematical approaches to modeling the mind since the 1950s are reviewed. Difficulties faced by these approaches are related to the fundamental incompleteness of logic discovered by K. Gödel. A recent mathematical advancement, dynamic logic (DL) overcame these past difficulties. DL is described conceptually and related to neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science, and philosophy. DL models h...

The Coceivability of a Disembodied Personal Life Beyond Death Based on David Lund’s Views

As science focuses exclusively on the physical, it seems to assume that the brain has a key role in the origin if not also the constitution of our consciousness; and thus the destruction of the brain, the nervous system, and the body makes it pointless or even absurd to think of any personal consciousness after death. But one need not be convinced by this. However, any effort to investigate a p...

Hierarchies of Control Processes and the Evolution of Consciousness

The purpose of this paper is to sketch an application of some ideas in the mathematical theory of control processes to biological phenomena such as instinct, learning, curiosity, adaptation, and, finally, consciousness. We shall employ the language and methodology of the theory of dynamic programming. Detailed accounts of the mathematical ideas will be found in [1], [2], [3]. For a quite differ...

Predicting the intention to perform physical activity in the elderly based on the theory of planned behavior

Today, with increasing the lifespan, the importance of health-promoting behavior and paying attention to maintaining individuals' function and autonomy are becoming increasingly evident and regular physical activity is considered as one of the important aspects of healthy lifestyle. This study aimed to apply the theory of planned behavior to predict the intention to do physical activity in the ...
